Being a parent of a special needs child has caused me to have drastic feelings about the way people react to my son's odd behavior. When Pete was a kid, sometimes a stranger’s kindness towards him would bring me to tears; other times someone’s annoyance with him would make me so mad I couldn’t see straight. When I heard about this website, I was reminded of people’s reactions to my son and wished we had a plan to go where I knew Pete would be treated with informed understanding and kindness. In the past, I usually have to do a lot of research to find the right doctor, babysitter, and even the right hotels that will accommodate us and make Pete comfortable. Being able to access this website and finding a good fit for Pete puts my mind at ease. As a hairdresser, I have a reputation for being able to handle odd behaviors/special needs people, and being informed by my parent was key to my success. people and being informed. Knowing the littlest things like “he won’t put a cape on” or “she won’t sit down, you’ll have to cut her hair while she stands up”, makes a huge difference. I used to cut a boy’s hair in the back of my salon because he loved trains and we were right next to the Metra line. He would scream and cry when I tried to cut his hair inside but when we walked outside I could get his haircut done in 5 minutes!!! Adapting to differences is super easy if you're willing to do it. Getting to know the special needs child comes with time, but unstressing the parent with confidence, understanding, and patience is the game changer. seriously it didn't matter what the kid look like when I was finished they always left happy because of the way they were treatedDiane (Stylist)
